PRETORIA, Feb 5 (TSR-SABC) — Efforts to resolve South Africa’s energy crisis and service delivery challenges in some municipalities are expected to top the agenda during the Cabinet Lekgotla (gathering) which is under way in Pretoria.
The three-day gathering follows last week’s Lekgotla (a meeting of leaders) of the ruling African National Congress National Executive Committee, which agreed on policy decisions that are expected to feature in President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address to Parliament next week.
The ruling party has called for, among other matters, the implementation of urgent interventions to resolve the energy crisis. This includes the need to fast-track the process of bringing the Medupi and Kusile power stations on stream by the June deadline.
National power utility Eskom has meanwhile announced that it will start implementing load-shedding shortly and this will possibly continue for the rest of the week.
The ANC decision to cap land ownership by foreign nationals, and the introduction of new measures to expedite land and agrarian reform, will also form part of the closed-door discussions at the Cabinet Lekgotla here.
