“Rise against the injustice of Erdogan’s Tyranny. Rise against the policies of hypocrisy perpetrated by the Erdogan Regime.” The defacement message reads.

“Syria and Turkey are one. We salute Turkey’s brave protesters.”

As of 22:40 GMT, the website of President Abdullah Gul has been offline, together with the website of the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the websites for the Istanbul Directorate of Security and the Istanbul Governor’s Office.

The hacktivists earlier targeted municipal governments in Mersin and Izmir.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed from the very beginning of the protests in Turkey, that he would not lend any importance to the demonstrators, and described the protesters as ‘radical’, ‘thieves’ and ‘extremists’.

Violence raged overnight as riot police in Istanbul and Ankara fired more tear gas and water cannon at flag-waving protesters who set cars ablaze, hurled stones and bellowed angry slogans against Erdogan and his policies, chanting “Tayyip, Resign!”

The United Nations called for a full investigation into allegations of excessive use of police force against anti-government demonstrators while Turkey’s main union federation launched a two-day strike over what it branded “state terror”.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has admitted that “there have been some mistakes, extremism in police response.” He has also promised that legal action would be taken against officers who acted disproportionately.

Earlier today Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc apologised for the police response to initial protests.  However, Turkish protesters have rejected the government’s apology and continue the protest.
