December 6, 2012 (TSR) – “Israel should realize that the world’s political situation and international laws with regard to Palestine have changed after Palestine was granted the status of the UN nonmember observer state,” the US diplomat, who asked to remain anonymous, was quoted by the Palestinian al-Manar Weekly as saying.

The official also warned that the next Israeli government, specially if led by Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, should prepare itself for management of “true and fruitful talks” with the Palestinian side and avoid the present “vicious circle” if it is willing to prevent a deterioration of Israel’s problems.

On Thursday, the UN General Assembly voted to grant nonmember observer status to the state of Palestine.

The 193-member assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions at the UN headquarters in New York for a resolution approving the upgrade. Nine members, including Canada, Israel, and the United States, voted against it.

The vote is seen as a victory for the Palestinians, but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States.

Meantime, Palestinian Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Friday welcomed the UN General Assembly’s Yes vote, and described it as a victory for Palestinians.

“This is a new victory on the road to the liberation of Palestine and return and we congratulate ourselves,” senior Hamas official, Ahmed Yussef, said on Friday.

“We in Hamas consider this a shared achievement that casts joy on our people,” he added.
