September 6, 2012 (TSR) – A senior tourism official said the revenues Iran has collected from the world delegations from over 50 countries visiting the country for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit have been almost three times more than the average income the country earns from foreign tourists. According to Iran’s own calculations, it would have earned at least $50 million.

“Based on international figures, the calculated income for each foreign tourist in our country is $1,730, while the figure for each foreign guest who visited the country for the NAM summit stood at over $5,000,” said Deputy Head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization for Tourism Affairs Manouchehr Jahanian.

Meantime, he said that the Iranian government only paid the travel and accommodation costs of each leader plus four of the other officials accompanying him.

Some 51 countries sent their leaders to the 16th heads-of-state summit of NAM last week, while over 150 delegations from the world countries and bodies attended the other meetings of the bloc in Tehran.

Iranian Vice-President for International Affairs Ali Saeedlou told reporters last month that Iran is prepared to host 7,000 guests during the summit.
