The Council of Heads of State and Government of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), expresses its deep sorrow at the passing away of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Commander Hugo Chavez Frias, strong advocate of unity and South American integration.

It was under the leadership of President Hugo Chavez visionary, in April 2007, when it was decided in Isla Margarita, Venezuela, the creation of UNASUR.

Since then, his tireless commitment to the cause of South American integration process marked with our stamp inspired by the pursuit of happiness and justice for the majority.

The memory of President Chavez will linger in the collective memory of our people for their role as regional leader of integration and as a symbol of a generation of statesmen who consolidated the foundations of identity and unity of South America, following the legacy left us by the liberators .

The Council of Heads of State and Government of the Union in its accompanying pain and encouraged in their strength of spirit, the noble people and the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in particular, to the family of President Chavez such difficult circumstances.
