Russia, China reiterate Rejection of Foreign Intervention in Syria or Changing Regime by Force

Spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Liu Weimin, said that Russia and China oppose foreign intervention in Syria or changing the regime by force.

In a daily press release on Tuesday, Weimin added that Moscow and Beijing believe that there should be an immediate halt of violence in Syria, adding that a political dialogue should start as soon as possible.

He underscored that the international community should provide pivotal support to the UN Envoy Kofi Annan’s plan, urging all sides to implement the plan fully and comprehensively.

Bogdanov: No discussions with the US on the Regime in Syria

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Bogdanov underlined that Russia doesn’t hold any talks with the US on the regime in Syria.

Commenting on Washington statements about discussing plans regarding the Syrian leadership, Bogdanov denied in a statement to NOVOSTY any discussions in this regard, adding “these issues should be dealt by the Syrians themselves.”

“We are holding talks with our partners to activate the international community in order to carry out Annan’s plan and end  the violence circle in Syria,” Bogdanov said.

He added that Moscow is disappointed with the decision of the so-called the free army which rejected to implement Annan’s plan, saying “this is regrettable and so negative.”

Russian Foreign Ministry: Gatilov Stressed that Annan’s Plan is the Base for Political Settlement in Syria

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov stressed that Annan’s plan is the base of reaching a political settlement in Syria.

Gatilov’s remarks came during his meeting with the UN Envoy Kofi Annan in Geneva.

A statement released by the Ministry said that Gatilov stressed that all external sides with connection to the Syrian issue should work together, adding that the international community should coordinate efforts to implement the plan fully and comprehensively.

“Russia is communicating with the Syrian authorities and the opposition groups with the aim of holding a political dialogue. All countries which have influence on the opposition should also work in that way,” the statement stipulated.

Later, quoted by Russia Today website as commenting on the results of his talks with Annan, Gatilov said the international envoy to Syria considers that in order for his plan to be implemented broader support is needed by the external players, particularly those who can influence the Syrian opposition and push it to take a more constructive stance.

“Among these players known by everybody are those countries that are directly influential in Syria’s affairs like its neighbors and the pivotal Western countries,” Gatilov added.

He considered that the difficulties in communication between the international community and the Syrian opposition lie in the opposition being divided and lacking in a unified base.

Russian Foreign Ministry: Announcement of Armed Opposition its rejection of Annan’s plan is bid to foil international efforts

Alexander Lukashevich, Spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry underlined that the announcement of the armed opposition in Syria its rejection to commit to Annan’s plan is a bid to foil the international efforts for a political settlement.

Commenting on statements by spokesperson of the so-called the free army about disengagement with Annan’s plan, Lukashevich told INTERFAX today that such statements arouse deep concern.

“They ignore the most important point which is the halt of violence agreed on April 12th.. we see that as an endeavor to make the international efforts for a settlement in Syria a failure,” the Spokesperson said.

He added that there are field developments where Syrian Army soldiers, officers are killed by the attacks of the gunmen who violate the cease-fire.
